ESI Noise certification for a container ship
The Challenge
Container vessels, bulk carriers, and oil tankers generate noise during operations. While this is generally not an issue at sea, airborne noise emissions can become a disturbance for residents when a vessel is berthed in port.
To address this, some ports have implemented maximum airborne noise level regulations for ships during port stays. Rather than outright banning noisy vessels, several port authorities have incorporated the ESI-Noise protocol into their requirements.
The Environmental Ship Index (ESI) evaluates various environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions, waste management, and noise levels. Ships that meet these standards may qualify for port fee reductions, providing a financial incentive for operators to minimize their environmental footprint.
To take advantage of this program, the container vessel operator ship engaged JASCO ShipConsult to conduct the standardized noise measurements and issue an ESI Noise Certificate.
The Solution
To provide the ship owner with an ESI-Noise certificate, JASCO ShipConsult conducted a structured noise assessment following the official NEPTUNES protocol.
Preparing for the Assessment
As an approved service provider for ESI Noise measurements, JASCO ShipConsult ensured that all necessary conditions were met before testing. This included:
- Reviewing the vessel’s general arrangement plan to determine optimal measurement locations.
- Confirming that generator engines and ventilation fans were operating under normal conditions.
- Securing approval for onboard access to key noise sources, such as exhaust gas outlets and ventilation systems.
- Allocating a four-hour window for onboard measurements.
Conducting the noise measurements
To minimize disruption to port operations, the assessment was conducted overnight while the vessel remained docked. This strategic timing allowed for accurate data collection without interfering with cargo loading activities. Measurements were taken at multiple points around the ship to capture a comprehensive noise profile.
Data processing and certification
Within two days, the recorded noise data was processed, analyzed, and documented according to the ESI Noise protocol. The results were compiled into an official report, providing the vessel operator with a clear understanding of its noise emissions and compliance status.
The Benefit
The containership received a high ESI noise ranking, demonstrating airborne noise emissions significantly lower than the industry average.
With its ESI Noise Certificate, the vessel is now eligible to apply for port fee reductions in all participating ports, providing cost savings while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable operations.
